Becoming a Colorist

If something is buzzing in your head, read this...

So, it seems like a click-bating title huh? Becoming a Professional Colorist.

Well.. it obviously is a pretty long road. It’s not just about learning Davinci Resolve, whatever version it might be, but it’s all about the experience on the field. Experience with the client as a human being, experience with the software as a professional, and experience in a real-life scenario.

Due to my years of experience, I decided to create a Graph, the ‘Colorist Career graph’ explained in the video below (if you’re more of a blog person, just read that out after the video).

So, this graph you’re seeing, is the Professional Colorist Career Graph, it represents every Freelance Colorist’s Life moments, and it’s subdivided into 4 parts:

PHASE 1: The Beginning
You start getting interested in the video industry and try to understand how to use software and look for new gear.

PHASE 2: First Steps in the Industry
You do a random course (or you start to take seriously this matter through YouTube tutorials) and in a short time you learn tons of new skills, and new ways to do things and you start being paid to do this.

PHASE 3: Look Mom, I’m an Artist!
You feel like you learned everything, or you don’t know what you have to learn.

You are in a stall position: hired and paid as a technician, to “match colors” and not to give the last brushstroke to the painting.

Clients don’t call you Artist.
You’re not different from any other technician.
You’re not recognized for a specific taste or a specific way of working.

And in this phase, you may think: “GREAT, this is it, I’m a Colorist!”

Well… you are not.

It’s good saying to you this: It’s not enough

And I’m going to show you, in Phase 4, how your life could realistically become unique. Phase 4 is the most important one, and you’re going to find a big surprise with it. Be sure to start building your future.

Be sure to look up for that, and to take your place in the Masterclass during Black Friday day.

Today we talk about Phase 4 of the Professional Colorist Journey.

During phase 4 of the Professional Colorist Journey, you start developing your skill-set, and you get hired by clients who know you for your value.

In this position, which for many could sound utopistic, you grow every day delivering projects who bring to your career continuous growth.

You feed connections that will bring to you more and more great projects.
You develop your style and an original touch:  people know about it through online & offline networks.

You ensure your legacy as a key point in your industry.

Easy? No, it isn’t.

It’s a tough, long journey, full of sacrifices.

But guess what: we have the solution.

Is it a shortcut? No
Is it a secret method? No
Is it a YouTube tutorial about the ‘Cinematic Look’? NOOPE

Is it a defined Roadmap? Yes

Tons of Filmmakers have been (and many are) along this journey like you.

But what’s the definition of the Roadmap?
Simply enjoy your career evolution, with methodical helps given by professionals who spent time learning all about it!

Just think about this: would you travel from Rome to Moscow without Google Maps? Maybe not. But with it, with that guide to follow, it will just take time the travel

That’s the whole point behind the Professional Colorist Masterclass , making a scenario, a methodical roadmap for aspiring freelance colorists. But that’s a topic for another blog post. For now, be sure to check it (and consider enrolling if the enrollments are open at the moment you’re reading this).

Let me know about this here or privately via social!

Until the next time,

delivering the future!
